Mary Ellen Owens

Mary Ellen Owens

Mary Ellen Owens, 97 (and eight months) of Aliquippa, is now worshiping in person with her loving Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

She was born June 3, 1923 in Wireton, Pennsylvania, to the late John and Tamar (Backhouse) Owens.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Jane (David) Vaughn, Tamar Owens and Betty (Alfred) Lovra.

At the age of ten Mary Ellen gave her life and heart to Jesus Christ which formed who she would be and the decisions she would make.

Mary Ellen was focused on her family and being the hands and feet of Christ.  She loved to talk about her favorite childhood memories of singing in the choir with her sister Jane, helping take care of her family, and being a working woman. She started at Farmers Bank which transitioned to Mellon Bank. Mary Ellen worked the Ambridge branch, then the Hopewell branch where she retired as a manager after 43 years- which enabled her to tithe and continue to do the Lord’s work.

Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting Mary Ellen could feel the love of Jesus through her joy, her humor, and her acts of service. She began her lifelong music ministry singing, playing piano and organ at Ambridge Christian Missionary Alliance Church and continued to play at Crestmont Alliance Church (now the Gospel Tabernacle), North Branch Presbyterian, and Monaca United Methodist playing and praising for over 75 years.

Mary Ellen lived with a posture of humility and openness to God’s word and Jesus’ calling in all aspects and circumstances of life which made her who she was. Mary Ellen wanted to make sure everyone knew that they were loved by her but especially by Jesus, that her works were for the glory of God and that arriving in heaven was her life’s goal.

Family and friends will miss her baking, her consistently updated knowledge of Pittsburgh sport news and schedules, and the light that she would shine into their lives with her always timely scripture and hymn recall and constant covering with prayer.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, March 5th, 2021 at the Huntsman Funeral Home and Cremation Services, inc., 2345 Mill Street Aliquippa, PA 15001, from 3pm to 7pm, with a service immediately following at 7pm officiated by Rev. David Vaughn and Pastor Joel Repic. The service will also be available via zoom.

All CDC guidelines will be followed, masks and social distancing required.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Mary Ellen’s memory to the Gospel Tabernacle
