Mary Rovnak

Mary Rovnak, 91, formerly of Aliquippa, passed away surrounded by family on August 15, 2016 at the Tidewell Hospice in Sarasota, Fla. Mrs. Rovnak was born Maria Fencak, later recorded as Mary Anne Fenchak, on July 17, 1925, daughter of the late Michael and Anna Fenchak. She immigrated from her native Davidov in present-day Slovakia to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1933 before moving to Kirkland Lake, Ontario with her parents. Mary later lived with her family in Windsor, Ontario where she wed her husband, Michael Rovnak, on July 5, 1947 before making her home in Aliquippa, Pa. In addition to serving as a loving homemaker, Mary was a faithful member of St. Titus Catholic Church in Aliquippa. She was known and loved by friends and family for her traditional Slovak cooking, her Christmas cookies, and her love of singing. Mary was a longtime member of The Confraternity of Christian Mothers in Aliquippa. She enjoyed musical films, Slovak cultural events, opera music, playing the violin, and spending time with her grandchildren. Though Mary’s work on Earth has come to an end, she will be remembered by friends and family for her energy, her love of life, and her tireless dedication to family. She led a faith-filled life of service to others, most notably her loving husband, seven children, eleven grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Her devotion to her Catholic faith was always of particular importance to Mary, and her family is grateful that she was called to her eternal home on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by an infant sister, Anna Fencak. She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Michael Rovnak, of Sarasota, Fla.; brother Michael Fenchak (Pamela) of Windsor, Ontario; sons Michael Rovnak (Cora) of Ft. Myers, Fla., Thomas Rovnak (Cynthia) of Bradenton, Fla., Paul Rovnak (Robin) of Lancaster, Pa., and Robert Rovnak (Cynthia) of Sarasota, Fla.; daughters Mary Anne Adams-Turka (John) of Pittsburgh, Patricia Patchell (Edward) of Marshall Twp., Pa., and Susan Rovnak of Baltimore; eleven grandchildren, a great-granddaugher, and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends and family will be received on Sunday, August 21 from 2-6 PM in the Huntsman Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Aliquippa (2345 Mill St.) Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30AM on Monday, August 22 at St. Titus Catholic Church, Aliquippa, with the Rev. Howard Campbell presiding. Burial will take place at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Aliquippa.
