Daniel K. Yourd, Sr., of Ohio Township, PA, formerly of Moon Township, PA, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on July 19, 2025

Dan was born in Champaign, IL, on April 9, 1955. He is the son of Verna Yourd and the late Raymond A. Yourd.

Dan grew up in Grove City, PA. He attended Wittenberg University in Springfield, OH, where he earned a degree in Bio/Physics. It was at Wittenberg that he met the love of his life, Karen. They were married on July 23, 1977.

Dan completed a Nuclear Medicine program at the University of Pittsburgh and worked for several years for General Electric selling radiology equipment. He then returned to Pitt and earned a master’s degree in Health Physics. He worked almost 20 years for Duquesne Light Company at the Nuclear Power Plant in Shippingport. During this time, he coached his sons and many other children in baseball, soccer, and basketball. This joy of working with children led him to return to Pitt, where he earned his master’s degree in education.  Dan taught Science and Math at Moon Area Middle School for 18 years and retired in June 2020.

Dan’s passion was running. He ran 22 marathons and enjoyed running every day, especially the River Walk in Pittsburgh.

Dan is survived by his loving wife, Karen; their sons, Danny (Erin) and Matthew (Meredith); and the grandchildren he adored, Oliver, Rooney, Dorothy, Vincent, and Winnie. He is also survived by his mother, Verna; his twin brother, David (Helen); his brother, Raymond;  his sister, Sue (Steve); his mother-in-law, Patricia Ludwig; his sister-in-law, Kimberly (Kenneth) Parker; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at Huntsman Funeral Home and Cremation Services (1522 Coraopolis Heights Road, Moon Township, PA) from 2–4 and 6–8 on Thursday, July 24th.

A funeral service will be held at Riverdale Presbyterian Church (1555 Broadhead Road, Moon Twp) on Friday, July 25th at 11:00am. Pastor John Dykstra will officiate.

The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Gallagher Hospice.

Memorial contributions can be made to Riverdale Presbyterian Church, Gallagher Hospice, or a charity of your choosing.

  3. Just now reading this sad sad news! I remember chatting with him last year at the Robinson Mall. I’m just so shocked that he passed away! I’m in Virginia right now until Friday and I regret not being able to express my deepest sympathy to you in person! May God’s comfort, peace, and love surround you during this very difficult season of life!

  7. I was so sorry to hear of Dan passing. We enjoyed together at times running and knocking heads on the basketball court. What a competitor and he never stopped! Karen my blessings go out to you and your family as we reflect on Dan’s life! What a special man! That picture is how I will remember him!

  9. My deepest condolences to you and your family. Daniel, David, and I were class of 1973 graduates of Grove City High School and shared many classes and basketball experiences. His whole family are all good people and a credit to our town. I did not realize that Daniel went back to school at the University of Pittsburgh. I graduated from Pitt in 1977.
