Dorothy Mae (Morgan) Walzak
Dorothy “Dot” M. (Morgan) Walzak, 97, of Coraopolis, died on December 6, 2022 in Good Samaritan Hospice House, Wexford. She was born in Coraopolis on June 12, 1925 the daughter of the late James & Alice (Miller) Morgan. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Irwin “Irv” Walzak.
After graduating from Coraopolis High School in 1942, she worked as a secretary in the shipyards on Neville Island during World War II. After the war, prior to marrying Irv, she cleaned houses and worked as a secretary in downtown Pittsburgh. She married Irv in 1947 and they celebrated over 60 years of marriage before his death in 2009.
After the birth of their son, she became a homemaker, but was also a prolific volunteer. Over the years, she volunteered with the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 402, where Irv served many years as the Commander. She also volunteered at St. Joseph’s School and Meals on Wheels.
She loved to travel and traveled throughout both Europe and North America. She also loved bowling, and was very active in area leagues well into her 80’s. She was an avid walker and could be seen walking the hills in almost any weather, otherwise, she was often found at the library looking for the latest mystery or spy novel. After Irv passed, she thoroughly enjoyed traveling with her best friend Adesta to Reno to “play the slots.”
She is survived by her son, David Walzak (Rebecca), FL and two grandchildren, Sara Devine (Kevin), MD & Michael Walzak, WA. She’s survived by three great grandchildren, McCarthy & Elizabeth Devine, and Logan Walzak. She’s also survived by her nephew, Allan Walzak and his wife Gloria, whose devoted care and service allowed her to live independently until the end.
She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Virginia Archer, Elaine Hawkins, Donald Morgan & Irene Boltz, as well as her best friend, Adesta Peters.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Meals on Wheels, Coraopolis Memorial Library, or to the purchase of pavers at the Keith Holmes VFW Post 402.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will take place at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
