Mary E. Fowler
Mary E. Fowler, 72 of Moon Township, affectionately known to her grandchildren as “II” or “Gram” was called home to the Lord on April 8, 2019. She is survived by her loving husband Ted of 45 years and their two daughters Lisa Tolliver-Lehman (Benjamin Lehman and the late Michael Tolliver), Dorothy (Justin) Sikora; 5 grandchildren: Theodore and Melina Tolliver; Reef, Searra and Saylor Sikora; brothers Edward and David Pfohl; nephew Michael Pfohl; aunts Dorothy Lieb and Helen Phister; in addition to many cousins. Mary Edith Pfohl was born 1 November 1946, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Edward and Edith Pfohl of Patton, Pennsylvania. Mary attended a two room school house in Saint Lawrence, Pennsylvania and graduated from Bishop Carroll High School, Ebensburg, PA in 1964. After graduation Mary had ambitions to become a hair stylist and graduated from Prounto’s Hair Design Institute in Altoona, PA. She obtained her Pennsylvania State Certifications in Cosmetology, Teaching and Beauty Salon Owner/Operator’s licenses. Because of Mary’s love of music she also attended the Dusseldorf School of Opera in Germany and lived with her brother Ed and his wife Crystal while in Germany. Mary returned to the United States in 1971 and was employed by the Scheonemon Beauty School in State College, PA as the director and teacher. In 1973. Mary and Ted were married at the Saint Augustine Church, Saint Augustine, PA. Mary and Ted continued working in State College until they relocated to Moon Township in 1977. Mary opened “Mary Fowler’s Beauty Salon” in 1988. In addition to operating her beauty salon, her interests included volunteering at the schools, baking large amounts of cookies; but Mary’s main interest was race walking. She was a race walking coach for The Wing’s of Moon Track Club for many years. Due to her skilled coaching she had athletes qualify for the Junior Olympics in Oklahoma and Louisiana. Many of you most likely saw Mary training around the township, obtaining 9 minute miles! When she wasn’t training and working she was singing for the Saint Margret Mary’s Choir, Mary was very dedicated to her five grandchildren….whether it be a soccer game, a play performance, or a trip to Ocean City or Florida….she was vested in each of their lives. Mary showered them with “gram” cookies or the treasure she purchased for them. Over the years she developed a very special bond with the “fab five”. Mary never let a blade of grass grow under her feet…she was a mover and a shaker and liked to get things done. Mary continued to successfully operate her business until March 28, 2019. She will not just be a Sister or Wife or Grandmother that has passed from us, but she was a model, and in that role we could not have asked for a better or stronger woman. Mary had the voice of an angel, a laugh that rose above a crowd and a generous hand to anyone that needed it. A Memorial Mass will be held at Saint Margret Mary Catholic Church, 1 Parish Place, Moon Township, PA on April 13 2019 at 11:00 AM, followed by a luncheon at the church, internment shall be a Saint Joseph Cemetery, Old Thorn Road, Moon Township, PA at 1:00 PM In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to support Animal Friends, 562 Camp Horne Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15237. www.thinkingoutsidethecage.org
